11/16/12-Something Historical-Congratulations Kareem…Photography by Jon SooHoo

Today Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will be immortalized with a statue at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Here are two of my favorite images of Kareem:This photo of Kareem was taken during one of my most favorite days as team photographer. In March of 2008, the Dodgers played an exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox at the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to a record crowd of 115,300. Kareem threw out one of the many ceremonial first pitches this day.

I can’t remember a day when I felt more proud to be a Dodger. It was the 50th anniversary of the team being in Los Angeles and the first few seasons were played in the Coliseum while Dodger Stadium was being built. The Dodger fan’s experience this day was like stepping into a live sports museum with Dodgers legends, both old and current, being introduced. Can’t remember who won the game but it was a wonderful full day. Photo by Jon SooHoo/©Los Angeles Dodgers,LLC 2012

This photo was taken on black and white film during the mid 1980’s when Kareem was scoring at the Fabulous Forum. Here Kareem goes left over Clippers center James Donaldson. In the background is NBA legend Bill Walton. This was taken during the era of “Showtime” led by our owner Earvin “Magic” Johnson.   Photo by ©Jon SooHoo

Congratulations to Kareem! That was a special day at the Coliseum. It was a long day but I loved every minute of it from taking the shuttle bus from Dodger Stadium to the return late at night.
