Memories of Dodgertown…
During my many Spring Trainings in Vero Beach,Florida, most of my evenings were used as the designated driver to take different Dodger officials around town and one of the main stops was to a bar called “What-A-Tavern”. On the walls of this smoke filled bar were framed photos and magazine covers of Dodgers past and including one LIFE Magazine cover from 1948 that caught my attention. It had this massive amount of Dodgers in uniform photographed from overhead. I spent many Springs looking at this cover and wondering if I could try to do something like this.
I can’t remember who I asked in the minor league department, but I was given permission before the workout to attempt this photo.
Having my newly acquired medium format Mamiya RZ67 camera in tow with black and white film backs, I attempted to re-create this image with the current Minor Leaguers in camp in the Spring of 1995.
I believe I was about 100 players short of the amount of players in the original photo back in 1948.
This is the result from 1995. Notice in the upper left corner is Japanese legend Hideo Nomo, participating in Minor League camp for a half a second.
I am in awe of photographer George Silk who shot the original Dodger Rookies cover photo for LIFE Magazine in April, 1948.
I took this digital version in 2009 at Camelback Ranch in Glendale,Arizona….Where’s Kenley?
