Just heard about the passing of my friend, public address announcer David Courtney. He worked in Los Angeles for the Kings, Clippers and filled in once in awhile with the Dodgers. He was also the public address announcer in Anaheim for the Angels.
I first met David in KABC’s helicopter flying over LA with him as he did the traffic reports.
This photo is from January 13, 2011 at Staples Center for a Kings game.
He was very easy to talk to and he will be sorely missed.
Today Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will be immortalized with a statue at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Here are two of my favorite images of Kareem:This photo of Kareem was taken during one of my most favorite days as team photographer. In March of 2008, the Dodgers played an exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox at the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to a record crowd of 115,300. Kareem threw out one of the many ceremonial first pitches this day.
I can’t remember a day when I felt more proud to be a Dodger. It was the 50th anniversary of the team being in Los Angeles and the first few seasons were played in the Coliseum while Dodger Stadium was being built. The Dodger fan’s experience this day was like stepping into a live sports museum with Dodgers legends, both old and current, being introduced. Can’t remember who won the game but it was a wonderful full day. Photo by Jon SooHoo/©Los Angeles Dodgers,LLC 2012
This photo was taken on black and white film during the mid 1980′s when Kareem was scoring at the Fabulous Forum. Here Kareem goes left over Clippers center James Donaldson. In the background is NBA legend Bill Walton. This was taken during the era of “Showtime” led by our owner Earvin “Magic” Johnson. Photo by ©Jon SooHoo
Blake Griffin and Matt Kemp hang out in the dugout prior to game against the Diamondbacks September 2, 2009. Rarely does anyone make Kemp look small but Griffin does. © Jon SooHoo/Los Angeles Dodgers
This is not the most recent dunk against the Oklahoma City Thunder that has been seen all over the internet. This dunk was another incredible “Blake Griffin Special” as his head was literally on the other side of the back board when he threw it down last season against the Bulls. © Jon SooHoo/2010
